Alfalfa (Medicago sativa), a perennial in the family Leguminosae, is a cross-pollinated plant. It may be mowed 3-5 times a year, and resume the growth after mowing. the vegetative cycle of alfalfa is about five to seven years. Because of some superior characteristics– yield quantity, palatability, rich in nutrition, somatomedin, alfalfa is regarded as a perfect green feed, Moreover, it enjoysed"king of the forage grass"the fine reputation, is in the world cultivates. In addition, alfalfa is one of the important species conserving water and soil, nitrogen fixation, and improvement of ecological environment. Based on the practical needs, the physical-chemical characteristics of the soil in the west Jilin Province were determined. We also analyzed the effect of salinity-alkaline stress on the growth of alfalfa. The aim of our research is to clarify the variation rules of the soil. By means of analyzing the data, we should provide theoretical basis and technical support for the alfalfa cultivation. The results showed that the data, including the concentrations of CO32-, HCO3-, Na+, K+, electrical conductivity and pH value, may be used as the criterion on physical-chemical characteristics of the local soils. By controlling the feasible concentration of Na+ (0.0176-1.6355g·kg-1), the lower concentration of CO3- (0-1.5g·kg-1), pH value (7.38-10.89) and the range of electrical conductivity (91.5-1334us·cm-1), it is possible for alfalfa to grow normally.
