Phellinus baumii, well known as"sanghuang"in traditional Chinese medicine, has recently become more and more attractive as a source of physiologically beneficial medicine. The genus Phellinus belongs to the Hymenochaetaceae in the basidiomycetes. The fruiting body of Phellinus baumii was reported to possess antitumor and immuno-modulating activities, remarkable hostmediatory antitumor activity against grafted cancer in animals as Sarcoma 180. From this species, numerous researchers have isolated some essential substance, such as polysaccharide, which can stimulate the immune system of human. The physiological characteristics, chemical compositions of P.baumii and the other species of the genus Phellinus have been intensively studied, but the artificial culture of P.baumii was rarely studied. The present study was carried out to investigate the physiological characteristics of mycelial growth and to elucidate the possibility of the artificial production of P.baumii using mulberry sawdust. And the effects of aquatic extraction substance from residue of P.baumii on some plant growth were also studied in this paper. The results indicated that:1. The mycelium of P.baumii grew well at 25℃~29℃with a medium of pH 5.0~6.5 in the conditions of solid medium, and the optimal temperature and pH value was 29℃and 6.0 respectively. Mannitol was the optimal carbonic source, and the optimal nitrogenous source was yeast extract.2. Based on the growth of mycelium it was found that the mycelial growth of P.baumii was good in the liquid medium with pH 5.5~6.5, and best with pH 6.0. The optimum carbonic source was starch solubale and glucose and the best nitrogenous source was yeast extract in the fermentative condition of liquid medium. The most suitable liquid capacity was 100ml in 250ml flask. Fermentative cycle was 7d, for the output of mycelium in 7days was on the top.3. The PDA was found the optimum medium for mother spawn in the 10 mediums tested according to the growth speed and the pertential of the mycelial. Morever, corn, wheat, and soybean were found the suitable material for making planting spawn medium in the five grists tested. For planting fruiting body of P.baumii, mulberry sawdust, cob and the husk of rice were suitable in the 6 materials tested.4. The sawdust of mulberry was used to make medium with three treatments of chiken dung compost, lignin and control for planting fruiting body of P.baumii. It was found that the treatment with chicken dung compost was the best treatment, in which the mycelial growth of P.baumii was healthy and density and the fruiting body could be generated.5. It was studied that the effects of aquatic extraction substance from residue of P.baumii on mung bean seedling by the method of water culture. The results showed that the proper concentration of crude extract from residue of P.baumii would promote the seedling growth of mung bean, and the shoot fresh weight was added by20%. And the growth of side roots was promoted by 150%. And when add Zhongke leaf fertilizer, the effect will be better; the average wet weight of mung bean increase remarkably.6. It was studied that the influence of aquatic extraction substance from residue of P.baumii by the way of foliage spray on cabbage growth. The results showed the proper concentration of crude extract from residue of P.baumi would promote the growth and quality of cabbage, especially when it was sprayed with Zhongke leaf fertilizer, the output can be added by 26.3%.
