| The infectious bursal disease (IBD) is one of the most important diseases for the chicken industry. It usually causes immunosuppressions plus the primary disease. Therefore, the treatment of the research IBD has actual practical value. The treatments with antibody and the Chinese herbal medicine for IBD have already obtained good result and have widely used in the field. Even there were some researches of Western medicine treatment for IBD reported, but there is no an effective prescription was totally accepted and applied. Therefore, in order to look for a practical and effective treatment with Western medicine for IBD, the present research has been carried out and based on the main mechanism of IBD that causes the death of chicken. The medicine prescription and the method of treatment were studied.Based on the pathological study of the cases of IBD: the main symptoms and lesions of IBD are serious diarrhea, dehydration and enteritis, bursal atrophy, hemorrhages in the chest and the leg muscle, the uric acid salt precipitation in the kidney, thrombus formation was occurred in the small blood vessel in the heart, brain and the lung etc.; the main reason for death of the disease was due to the thrombus occurred in the heart, brain, lung in early stage, and the serious diarrhea causing body dehydration and low blood capacity in its later stage. Therefore, a principle for the medicine treatment of IBD was included anti-thrombus, supplement of body liquid, constringency, stop diarrhea and prevent dehydration etc. In addition, for against the possibility of secondary infections by bacteria resulting from the immunosuppression of diseased birds, anti-infection medicines were included in the treatment.According to the above treatment principle and basing on the research and analysis of pharmacology of the related medicines, medicine prescription, compatibility of medicines, taboo and preparation, a treatment prescription named "Bi-Huang combinations" was designed which included bismuth subcarbonate, sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and trimethoprim (TMP) in a ration of 3:1:0.2 (w/w) and functions neutralizing acidification of stomach, constringency, stopping diarrhea and keeping dehydration, and anti-bacteria. For the convenient of applications in the experiment, according to preparation request, the "Bi-Huang combinations" was made in the forms of tablet and powder and the contents of the medicine which is accounted with the contents of bismuth subcarbonate were 30g/bag and 0.30 g/piece respectively."Bi-Huang combinations" was used in two different trials to treat the birds which were infected by IBDV via the challenge with a very virulent IBDV strain GX8/99 and of the nature outbreaks respectively. The methods of using and the dosages: for the heavily diseased chickens, 0.30g medicine each chicken by oral medication and once a day for 3～5 days; for the lightly diseased chickens, 0.60g medicine each chicken was mixed to feed each day for 3～5 days. The death rate, protecting rate, weight gain, bursa-body indexes, the change of the antibody titers of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and avian influenza virus (AIV) of experiment chickens were recorded and analyzed. The experimental results showed that protection rates of 96.88%～100% and 93.70%～95.10% respectively were obtained from two trials of treatments of challenged and the nature outbreak chickens respectively, and were all significantly higher than those of the un-treatment control birds (P<0.05). Other observed items were not significantly different with those of the un-treatment birds (P>0.05).The results of the study demonstrated that the medicine prescription "Bi-Huang Combinations" has good results on the treatment of chickens experienced IBD. |
