Study On Environmental Stress And Countermeasure Strategy For Chinese White Dolphin In China

The Chinese white dolphin (Sousa chinensis Osbeck,1765 ), the so called Indo-Pacific hump-backed dolphin, is found in the shallow waters in subtropical and tropical Northwest Pacific and India Ocean. In China, it distributes mostly in nearshore waters of Guangxi, Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau, Fujian and Taiwan. Since 1980's, the populations of the Chineses white dolphin come to endangered gradually due to the negative aspects of anthropogenic activities and the exploitation of the coastal zones. It is necessary to carry out the study on the environmental stress the dolphin faces and the management strategies to improve the dolphin and biodiversity protection and the harmony between man and nature.Based on the surveys on the data from field and the laboratory with considerations of present status of the Chinese white dolphin, this study analyses intensively the causes of environment problems and put forwards the suggestions of countermeasures for dolphin protection with results as followings.(1)Based on the studies on the biological characters,the populations and distribution of the Chinese white dolphin with background exploitations of the coastal areas in China, the stress on the dolphin, such as habits reduction, accidental harms from human activities, environmental pollutions and food shortage, and its causes and development are analyzed and speculated.(2)After summarizing the present status of the dolphin protection and management, and following the idea of ecosystem management in the aspects of dolphin protection, the modes and countermeasures based on the ecosystem management for the Chinese white dolphin protection are proposed with aims and provide data for mitigation of the stress that dolphin faces from anthropogenic activities and economic development.(3)With real case of the Chinese white dolphin management in Xiamen, the utilization and exploitation status and the stress that dolphin faces in Xiamen is analyzed and the management experiences and problems in the dolphin protection are reviewed. It is believed that this study should have contributed useful data for the Chinese white dolphin protection and management in other areas of China.
