This paper studies the process of floral bud differentiation of Osmanthus fragrans 'Zijingui', Osmanthus fragrans 'Putongjingui', Osmanthus fragrans 'Sijigui', Osmanthus fragrans 'Zaoyingui', Osmanthus fragrans 'Ziyingui'and Osmanthus fragrans 'Yingyedangui', through outside observation light microscopy. The results show that the process of bud differentiation began at May and finished at mid-September, lasted more than four months. The process can be divided into seven stages: the involucrum differentiation phase, inflorescence primordium differentiation phase, flower primordium differentiation phase, sepal differentiation phase, petal differentiation phase of, stamen differentiation phase and pistil differentiation phase. From the process of floral bud differentiation, we can look that the differentiation speed has the slow-quick-slow characteristic. There is no difference for androecium development between six Osmanthus fragrans cultivars. There stamens can develop into normal pollen sacs and ripe pollens. But there are obvious difference for gynoecium development between O. fragrans 'Zijingui', O.fragrans 'Ziyingui', O.fragrans 'Sijigui'and O.fragrans 'Putongjingui', O. fragrans 'Zaoyingui', O.fragrans 'Yingyedangui'. When the pistil carpel primordium of 0. fragrans 'Zijingui', O. fragrans 'Ziyingui' , O. fragrans 'Sijigui' appears firstly, it presents only one spot. Then the spot can develop into normal pistial which contains ovary, style and stigma. But the pistil carpel primordium of O. fragrans 'Putongjingui', O. fragrans 'Zaoyingui', O.fragrans 'Yingyedangui' present two dots when it appears. With the development of flower bud, two dots could not healing. There is no ovary, style and stigma. Through floral bud differentiation study, the author suggests that the abnormal pistil development of O. fragrans 'Putongjingui', O. fragrans 'Zaoyingui', O. fragrans 'Yingyedangui' leads to its sterility.
