This study was mainly conducted to investigate wheat diet with xylanase substituting for corn on growth performance and digestion in NingDu chickens. One thousand and two hundred NingDu chickens (30 days old) were chosen and divided randomly into 4 groups, the first was given a corn-based diet, the second was given a corn + 30% wheat-based diet, the third was given a corn + 30% wheat-based diet with the addition of 100 mg/ kg xylanase and the final was given a wheat-based diet with the addition of 100 mg/ kg xylanase. Each group consisted of three replicates of 100 chickens. The experiment was divided into two stages of 31-60d and 61- 90d.The results showed that comparing with the group of the the corn-based diet, the group of the corn + 30% wheat-based diet did not show distinct difference in growth performance and nutrients digestibility (crude protein, calcium and phosphorus) (P > 0.05) ; there were trends of that the intestine chyme viscosity increased and the amylase and trypsin activity decreased, but not significant (P > 0.05) . The supplementation of 100 mg/ kg xylanase to corn + 30% wheat-based diet did not significantly increase the growth performance of chickens, but had higher uniformity and higher nutrient digestibility of crude protein, calcium and phosphorus(P < 0.05), there were an inceasing tendency for the amylase and trypsin activity and a decreasing trendency for intestinal chyme viscosity, near to the group of the corn-based diet (P > 0.05) . In the fourth group of wheat-based diet with the addition of 100 mg/ kg xylanase, there were negative influences on the growth performance, uniformity, nutrients digestibility, chyme viscosity, amylase and trypsin activity.
