Provenia is a mixture of organic acids, including benzoic acid. In addition to the beneficial effects of organic acids, it can be released in a specific part of gastro intestinal tract to maintain the intestinal pH and micro ecological balance. The study included two parts:(1)effects of Provenia and xylanase supplementation in wheat diets on the growth performance of broilers and gut;(2) effects of Provenia in commercial pellet feed on the growth performance of broilers, litter quality, foot pad and hock. The two studies are relatively independent, but both of them aim to investigate the functions of Provenia.Experiment 1: 1008 one-day old AA broilers were randomly allocated to seven treatments, with 12 replicates per treatment and 12 chickens per replicate, with the respective treatments being corn-soybean diet(T1), corn-wheat-soybean diet(T2), corn-wheat-soybean diet + 250g/t Provenia(T3), corn-wheat-soybean diet + 500g/t Provenia(T4), corn-wheatsoybean diet + xylanase(T5), corn-wheat-soybean diet + xylanase + 250g/t Provenia(T6),corn-wheat-soybean diet + xylanase + 500g/t Provenia(T7). The whole trial was last for 41 days. Feed contains 3100 kcal/kg of diet, 21.5% crude protein, 30% wheat and 55g/t xylanase is provided to the broilers at the age of D1 to 21. Feed contains 3060 kcal/kg of diet, 20%crude protein, 45% wheat and 65g/t xylanase is provided to chickens at the age of 22 to 41 days. The results showed, xylanase supplemented reduced the proportional weight of heart,and improved the glucose concentration in serum, the average weight and weight gain at D1-21(P<0.05). To D1-41, xylanase supplemented made the lipase activity, the ileum function,the digestibility of CP and AME increase significantly(P<0.05). The Provenia supplemented reduced protease activity. The 0.05% Provenia reduced the depth of small intestine. However,the 0.025% Provenia made the average weight and weight gain increase significantly(P<0.05).While Provenia and xylanase supplemented could significantly improve the population of caecal lactobacilli(P<0.05), but not change the population of Escherichia coli and Bifidobacterium. In short, Provenia and xylanase supplemented could improve growth performance and gut health of broilers.Experiment 2: 2400 one-day old AA broilers will be randomly allocated to twotreatments. One treatment receives basal diet(control). The other treatment receives feed contains 500g/t Provenia. Each treatment contains 12 replicates with 100 chickens per replicate. The results showed, the Provenia supplemented did not produce a significant effect of the average weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, mortality rate and the humidity of bedding(P<0.05). However, the Provenia reduced the pH and nitrogen content of the bedding, the foot pad lesions and hock burns of broilers. Therefore, the Provenia in cornsoybean diet on growth performance of broilers had no effect, but could change litter quality and improve the health status of foot pad and hock.
