Taking Mudangang forest centre in Dunhua of Jilin Province as the study area, the statistic regression models are established between LAI measured in filed and the different forms of Vegetation Index derived form SPOT-5 imagery data. Based on the R~2 values of the models, the performance and the limitations of the models are explored, and the best model was chosen. At last, the thematic map of LAI was made.The study has led to the following findings and conclusions:1. The multivariate linear regression can be regarded as the best model to describe the correlation between LAI and VI.2. The linear regression model and quadratic model are better than other sigle regression models, for the R~2 values are higher than others.3. The relationship between LAI and DVI is not obvious. As a variate, DVI is introduced in the multivariate linear regression, but it's not indicat that there is obvious relationship between them.4. It is found that there existed high correlation between LAI and RVI, and RVI can be considered as the best VI to establish model for LAI estimation.5. The soil and atmosphere have obvious inpacts on the relationship between LAI and VI.
