Poa pratensis L. acted as the uppermost constructive species of urban lawn in the north of China had its superiority of turf characters that other species could not irreplaceable. But its inherent character of growing slowly in seedling stage made the direct sowing seriously hindered, because it was easy to be invaded by weeds, the turf establishment was difficult and with low success radio. Concerning the cold and arid climate in north, the inter-specific competition and turf quality of the mixed-sowing turf were studied, as well as, the feasibility and optimal formulation were discussed in this paper based on the experiment that Lolium perenne L. and Festuca arundinacea Schreb. who grew fast in seedling stage were planted as protection species. The result showed that the mixed sowing protection species could effectively accelerate the speed of forming turf and resist weeds. Lolium perenne L. and Festuca arundinacea Schreb. had low over wintering rate, and the growth ability of the survival protection seeds decreased evidently, especially Lolium perenne L. The constructive species were significantly inhibited by protection species in all ratio of mixed sowing. When the seeding rate of constructive species was constantly 12g/m2 and the quantity of protection species reached more than 20g/m2, protection species generated the maximal inhibition to constructive species. On the basis of the data of two-years'observation to different index such as aboveground biomass, underground biomass, density, color, texture, coverage and homogeneity, fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was used to assess 9 treatments. The idea was proposed that according to the combination of 12g/m2 Poa pratensis L. and 10g/m2 Festuca arundinacea Schreb. was suitable for medium of long-time turf in this area.
