The city forestation plants can beautify city landscape, improving city climate, and serve as a suitable working and living environment for citizen, which could not been substituted. The cities in China have been developed quickly during past 20 years. Jinan city developed very quickly by the reconstructing old city area and developing new city area in recent years. The afforestation plays a important part in city construction project. We found that the surface mature soil was not been protected during the reconstructing old city area and developing new city area. And the soil for forestation at the reconstructed old city and new developing city area is mainly from unmatured soil mixed with much construction waste. The planting seedlings could survive at a high rate under carefully management with maturing, irrigating, but the growth conditions were not good. It is of a important application worthiness to study the relationships between soil conditions and seedlings surviving rates and growth conditions at reconstructed old city area and developing city new area in Jinan.Eight constrction fields at Jinan city were selected as investigating points of afforestation constrution projects. Soil samples were collected from the eight afforestation construction fields. The specific weight of surface soil, pH, electric conductivity (EC), organic matter, total nitrogen and total phosphrus contents of samples were determined. The surviving rates and growth conditions of planting seedlings at eight construction fields were investigated. The data of soil physical-chemistry characteristics was analyzed with the surviving rates and growth conditions of planting seedlings at eight construction fields. The research results showed: 1) the data of specific weight of surface soil at eight constrution fields indicated that the soil texture is more solid than usual soil; 2) pH of all soil samples is of large diffrence, and showed neutral pH value; the salt contents of all soil samples were very low, which indicated that soil is not of salinity for eight construction fields; 3) the organic matter, total nitrogen and total phosphorus contents of soil samples are higher than the values of soil samples investigated at same place in 1982 during the second national soil survey, which indicated that a large of mature was used at eight planting fields. The surface soil at eight construction fields mixed with a large of construction waste, which resulted in the difficulty for plant root growth, and maintaining soil water contents.Based on the comprehensive analysis of soil physical-chemistry characteristics, and the surviving rates and growth conditions of planting seedlings at eight construction fields, the suggestions for suitable plant species selection, suitable improving measurements for soil characteristics, and management for planting seedlings were proposed, which is supportive for city landscape construction and ecological city construction in Jinan.
