The tolerance to low temperature and light intensity in five sweet pepper rootstock varieties was examined, with'Chifengtexuan', a sweet pepper variety as control (CK). The purpose is to screen a rootstock variety which has higher tolerance to low temperature and light intensity. With this variety as rootstock, the tolerance to low temperature and light between grafted and own-root seedlings was compared. Meanwhile, the effect of grafting on plant growth, yield and quality of sweet pepper were studied. The results showed as follows.1. The electrolyte leakage and MDA content of rootstock seedlings were lower, the root activity, Pn, Fv/Fm and activity of antioxidant enzymes of rootstock seedlings were higher than those of the control. Comprehensive compared,'Weishi'represent the highest tolerance to low temperature and light intensity,'Buyeding'and'Jinfuzao'next, and'Tiemuzhen'and'Jiaozhen'the weakest among the five rootstock varieties. All of them have higher tolerance than the control.2. The tolerance to low temperature and light intensity between grafted seedling ('Weishi'as rootstock and'Chifengtexuan'as scion) and own-root seedling was compared. The LCP, EL and MDA content of grafted seedlings were lower than those of own-root seedlings, but the Pn, Fv/Fm andΦPSⅡ, SOD and POD activity, proline, soluble sugar and soluble protein content of grafted seedlings were remarkably higher, which indicated that grafted seedlings improved its tolerance to low temperature and light intensity.3. Compared with own-root, the grafted seedlings were planted had higher plants, thicker stems, larger leaf area, and higher yield. Yield per plant and fruit diameter of grafted seedlings were remarkable higher than own-root seedlings. The dry matter, Vc, soluble sugar and soluble protein content in fruits of grafted plants were higher than those of own-root. Therefore, graft had promotion effect on growth, yield and quality of sweet pepper.
