The Pullorum Disease is one kind of common infectious disease caused by Salmonella pullorum. It leads to chicken death in large amounts within short time, and thus is harmful to poultary industry. At present, the disease is always controlled by means of anti-biotics, synthesized chemicals, and hormones, ect, which may be dangerous for human healthy considering their long-term residue in chicken. Therefore, it is important to explore new medicines which have an effective role in preventing and curing pullorum disease disease, but no such side-effects as long-term residue and the appearance of anti-chemical bacteria. The leaves of Sapium sebiferum was traditionally used to cure Pullorum Disease by farmers in Yongshun county. In order to demonstrate the preventive and curative effects of Sapium sebiferum leaf on the pullorum disease, in the present study, we tested both the water-extracts and alcohol-extracts on the inhibition of bactera including Salmonella pullorum in vitro and on the inhibition of Salmonella pullorum C79-13 in situ, as well as the toxic effect of extracts from Sapium sebiferum leaves on chicken growth and development. Both the water-extractive and alcohol-extractive masses from Sapium sebiferum leaves were effective on inhibiting the tested bacteria growth with the latter much better, suggesting that most of the effective components are alcohol-soluble. 85% of the artificially infected chicken were alive after treated with water-extractives from Sapium sebiferum leaves and masculine gender, which is significantly higher than control treated with either water or methynol. The In impatient toxicity experiment showed that the extracts is very nearly no toxic for chicken. Taken together, we concluded as follows:1. Both the water-extractive and alcohol-extractive masses from Sapium sebiferum leaves were effective on inhibiting the tested bacteria growth with the latter much better, suggesting that most of the effective components are alcohol-soluble.2. The extracts from Sapium sebiferum were very effective on preventing and curing the Pullorum Disease on a small scale.3. The leaves of Sapium sebiferum was less toxic and what is more, could be used as sources of necessary amino acids and other nutrients for chicken...
