Drunken horse grass(Achnatherum inebrians),an intoxicating and water and soil conservation grass growing at native grassland in Northwestern China, symbiotic with endophytes was studied in this paper, mainly including analysis of the diversity of morphology, biological and physiological characteristics and genetic diversity of Neotyphodium endophytes from Achnatherum inebrians. The main results summarized as followings:1.A total of 21 endophytic fungal isolates were isolated and purified from 5 different geographic populations of Achnatherum inebrians.Based on appearance of colony, growth rate and conidial measurements of isolates on potato dextrose agar(PDA),all isolates were classified into 5 types.2.Based on the growth experiment of Neotyphodium endophyte from A.inebrians at range of temperatures and pH values, the result showed the diversity of biological characteristics of Neotyphodium endophytes.3.The endophytes varied in its ability to grow on media with various osmotic stress, showed the diversity of physiological characteristics of Neotyphodium endophytes.4.Random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) markers were used to investigate genetic diversity and evolutionary characteristics of 30 endophytic fungal isolates from 5 populations of A.inebrians.The study indicated that there were higher genetic diversity among A.inebrians, performed higher genetic differentiation.Based on the UPGMA cluster analysis,30 individual endophyte isolates could be divided into 5 groups. There was a significant(p<0.05) correlation between genetic distance and geographic distance among Neotyphodium endophytes.
