In order to determine the mutagenic effects of space flight and the properties of space induced mutations,5 japonica rice varieties,Zhenzhuhong,Lianjing No.2, Yuguang,Beijinghong and Lianjing No.1,were carried on-board by Shenzhou-6 spaceship for 5-day-flight.In M1 generation,20-30 individuals were selected at random from each variety for determination of phenotype observation. The mutation rates of genome are relatively low,3.4%~10.1%,3.3%~8.5%,4.0%~10.1%,1.1%~3.5%and 2.1%~3.6%for rice without observed phenotype changes of the three varieties. In contrary, higher mutation rates of 13.7%(MSP-4),12.1%(MSP-10) and 13.1% (MSP-11) were obtained from three individuals with observed phenotype changes. Further investigation will focus on the identification of space flight induced mutation in rice genome. In this project, molecular marker techniques were employed to identify the origin of the rice materials and to eliminate contamination by any foreign varieties.By using SSR and AFLP,we found 7 polymorphic loci.Different combinations of these polymorphic loci and characteristics would distinguish the 5 rice varieties. In addition, the space flight treated materials, though showed mutation in genome, still contained the variety specific locus properties, indicating that this strategy would be applicable for identification of the origin of space flight treated rice materials.Further applications would relay on the increasing number of varieties and loci.
