Growth and development characters, stress resistance and quality of Nigeria eggplant (NE) were investigated with compared to Lu eggplant (LE) in this study. The details were as follows:1. The growth changes of efficient leaf area, plant height, and leaf number of NE were similar to LE. But the maximum values of efficient leaf area and leaf number were all obviously higher than LE. The growth rate of LE was obviously higher than that of NE with plants growing.2. The diurnal changes of photosynthetic rate of NE was similar to LE during fast-growing season. The diurnal variations of photosynthetic rate of NE and LE showed an unimodal curve, and the maximum value of photosynthetic rate appeared at 12:00.Two variety light intensity maximum value epoch is consistent, The maximum value of stomatal conductance of LE appeared 2 hours later than that of NE. The root–shoot ratio and root activity were obviously higher than that of LE during fast-growing season.3. MDA content in leaves of NE was higher than that of LE, and increase amplitude of MDA in leaves of NE were more rapidly than those of LE, whereas the contents of soluble sugar, proline, chlorophyll and soluble protein and activities of SOD and POD were lower than those of LE under low temperature stress. Increase ranges of soluble sugar and proline were lower during the low temperature treatment. Whereas decomposition rates of soluble protein and chlorophyll were higher than those of LE.4. Relative electric conductivity and MDA content in leaves of NE were lower than that of LE, and increase amplitude of MDA in leaves of NE were more slowly than those of LE. But the contents of soluble sugar, proline, chlorophyll, soluble protein and activities of SOD, POD were higher than those of LE under continuous high temperature treatment. Increase ranges of soluble sugar and proline were higher during the high temperature treatment. Whereas decomposition rates of soluble protein and chlorophyll were lower than those of LE.5. The activities of SOD and POD and the MDA content in leaves of NE increased with the increase of drought stress time, and the activities of SOD, POD, proline, soluble protein in leaves of NE were obviously higher than those of LE, whereas the MDA content is lower. This indicated that the drought-resistant ability of NE was higher than LE.6. Under salt stress, MDA content in leaves of NE was lower than that of LE, and increase amplitude of MDA in leaves of NE were more slowly than those of LE. While the contents of soluble sugar, proline, chlorophyll, soluble protein and activities of POD and SOD were higher than those of LE. Increase ranges of soluble protein, soluble sugar and proline were higher during salt stress treatment than those of LE.7. Contents of protein, Vc, free amino acid, soluble sugar in fruits of NE were higher than that of LE. But the VE content and mineral nutrient concentration in fruits of NE were lower than those of LE.
