The effects of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) on the morphology, growth and antioxidant capacity of channel catfish ovary cell (CCO) and grass carp kidney cell (CIK) were investigated. The effects of sodium selenite on channel catfish virus (CCV) and reovirus of grass carp (GCRV) were also investigated. The results showed the effects of Na2SeO3 on CCO were in dose and time dependent manners. Low doses of Na2SeO3 had little effect on CCO, and high doses of it (≥5μmol/L) inhibited the cell viability significantly, even induced cell death. The longer the incubation time was, the stronger the damage was. Na2SeO3 at high concentration (≥10μmol/L) induced CCO oxidative damage due to its oxidant properties. Significant decreases in activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were observed. The level of lipid peroxidatioin (the content of malondialchehyche-MDA) and the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were increased significantly. Na2SeO3 at the concentration of 10 nmol/L promoted the growth of CIK significantly. Higher doses of Na2SeO3 and longer incubation time inhibited the cell viability significantly. Na2SeO3 at high concentration (≥1 mmol/L) induced CIK oxidative damage due to its oxidant properties. CIK was more sensitive to Na2SeO3 then CCO. Na2SeO3 at concentration of 1μmol/L could protect CCO and CIK cells against viral infection and reduce cell damagement caused by CCV and GCRV.
