The development of new experimental design and analysis methods that can provide satisfactory formulae through conducting as little as possible of implementation is extremely important for complex multi-factor and multi-level optimization problem, such as animal and plant nutrition, and fermentation engineering. Based on uniform design and support vector regression, a novel experimental design and analysis method named as UD-SVR for the prescription optimization was proposed. It was introduced to the artificial diet formulation optimization of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner), and provided a new and effective ways for prescription optimization with multi-parameter and multi-level.(1) The meridic diet of cotton bollworm was optimized based on UD-SVR. The optimization results showed that mean weight each pupa increased from 0.2436g in the initial benchmark formulation to 0.3044g in the optimal prescription including six factors after carrying out only 22 schemes. The optimized formulation(1000mL) was as follows:soybean flour 172g/L, wheat bran,14.4g/L, yeast extract 68g/L, sugar 21.2g/L, rapeseed oil 2drops/L, vitamin C 40tablets/L(The amount of other ingredients was as the same as the benchmark formulation). UD-SVR is more efficient than the reference models, and has the potential to be widely used for experimental design and analysis of the prescription optimization.(2) Pilot research on the holidic diet of cotton bollworm based on uniform design has been made in this paper. Starting from the holidic diet of Epiphyas postvittana, ten effective formulations were selected after carrying out 28 schemes including twenty factors, the results showed that the mean weight each pupa of the optimal prescription reached 0.1887g, however, cotton bollworm almost can not survive fed on the original Epiphyas postvittana formulation. The optimal formulation(100mL) was as follows: Arginine 140mg, Methionine 35mg, Leucine 270mg, Isoleucine 160mg, Lysine 220mg, Phenylalanine 85mg, Threonine 75mg, L-tryptophan 40mg, Valerian Ammonia acid 227mg, Histidine 110mg, Serine 120mg, Tyrosine 145mg, Proline 144mg, aspartic acid 320mg, Cysteine 98mg, glutamic acid 165mg, Glycine 45mg, Phenylalanine 60mg,130mg Asparagine, Glutamine 150mg(The amount of other ingredients was as the same as the original benchmark formulation), and it can be considered as the benchmark formulation for next UD-SVR optimization. By preliminary experiments, the direction and priority of holidic prescription optimization for cotton bollworm was further clarified.
