Background: There has never been an objective standard of diagnosing the different TCM syndrome of stroke. Objectives: To investigate into the relationship between the different TCM syndrome of hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage (HTCH) and the three indexes: the hemorrhage volume on CT, the scores of nervous impariment, the myelin basic protein (MBP) levelin serum. At the same time, an analysis of correlation and regression was made to establish the objective and quantitative diagnosis to the different TCM syndrome of HTCH. Materials and methods: 96 patients of HTCH were collected as research subjects, who must be able to diagnose one of the six TCM- syndromes, among which 58 was male and 38 was female. The average age was 63.85±11.74 years (aged 49-82years). According to the differentiation standards of TCM, 15 patients belonged to the syndrome of wind and fire evils confusing the upper orificies, 12 patients belonged to the syndrome of phlegm and dampness stagnatiag the mind, 13 patients belonged to the syndrome of phlegm and heat stagnating the heart, 9 patients belonged to the syndrome of vital-qi having been exhausted and the mind deranging, 22 patients belonged to the syndrome of deficiency of qi with blood stasis and 25 patients belonged to the syndrome of convulsion due to deficiency of yin. 30 healthy people were taken as normal control group, among which 16 was male and 14 was female, the average age was 61.37±8.82 years (aged 49-82years). To mark according to the standard. To calculate the hemorrhage volume according to the formula. To determine MBP level in serum by ELISA method. Results: 1. The hemorrhage volume was significantly different among TCM syndromes in HTCH patients (P<0.01). The hemorrhage volume in the syndrome of vital-qi having been exhausted and the mind deranging was the most , then the syndrome of phlegm and heat stagnating the heart, the syndrome of wind and fire evils confusing the upper orificies, the syndrome of phlegm and dampness stagnating the mind, the syndrome of deficiency of qi with blood stasis, the syndrome of convulsion due to deficiency of yin followed in sequence. 2. The scores of nervous impairment were also significantly different among TCM syndromes in HTCH patients (P<0.0 1). 3. The MBP level in serum, both in the acute period and after the acute period of HTCH was significantly higher than that of the normal control group. 4. The MBP level in serum was also signficantly different among TCM syndormes in HTCH patients (P<0.0 1). 5. The syndroms of phlegm and heat stagnating the heart had no difference when compared with the syndrome of the wind and fire evils confusing the upper orificies in the three indexes: the hemorrhage volume, the scores, the MBP level in serum (P>0.05). 6. In the patients with HTCH, the hemorrhage volume and the MBP 2 level in serum were positively correlated to the scores of nervous impairment. Conclusion: 1. The degree of brain impairment can be reflected by the scores of nervous impairment. hemorrhage volume and the MBP level in serum. 2. The degree of brain impairment among TCM syndromes of HTCH is different.
