Objective: To study the centrum mechanism of the neurogenic pulmonary edema (NPE) by the stererotactic electrolytic lesion the rats' the bilateral anterior hypothalamus (AH) and the neucleus of solitary tract (NST) in medulla to assess the concentrations of catecholamine in the serum and brain tissue, and assay the changes of pulmonary pathology. Methods: We used the stereolytic electrolytic lesion to destroy the bilateral AH and NST in medulla of SD rats , then mensurated the changes of catecholamine in the serum and brain tissue in 30 mm., 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, respectively, and the changes of blood pressure in 3 hours, as well as the pulmonary pathology observed by the electro-microscope and microscope. Results: 30 minutes after stereotactic electrolytic lesion BP jumped to maximum quickly and maintain the level in a hour then drop gradually. 3 hours after lesion BP was still higher than that before lesion significantly (p<0.05).CA in serum increased quickly to the maximum in a hours, then drop gradually. While AH fall down to minimum after 30 mm, recovered dramatically, for NTS the recovery was slower. The pathological examination demonstrated the lungs capillary hyperemia alveolar and interstitial edema, and infiltration of inflammatory cells. The serious swell of alveolar I, II type cells and endothelial cells was observed by electron microscopy. Conclusion:1 . AH . NTS which are the core of modulating is crucial for the sympathetic nerve play a important role in the course of NPE. Dysfunction of them are the basis of NPE. -3- 2. The protection of hypothalamus and medulla treatment of NPE after CNS injury.
