Objective: To clarify the machenism of primary nerve center and substance basis in the medulla oblongata of the relationship between foot yang-ming meridians and stomachMethods:To observe changes of substance P (SP)in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) after electro-acupuncture(EA) at "sibai"points and "zusanli" points in the foot yang-ming meridians in rats, and effects of electrical lesion of NTS and microinjection of SP into the NTS on gastric myoelectric activity after EA at "sibai"points and "zusanli" points.Results:1. The average amplitude and ratio of period to time in the phase of high activity of gastric myoelectric slow wave and the number of apex clusters of gastric myoelectric fast wave were enhanced in a certain extent after EA "sibai"points and "zusanli" points, wheas EA at "chengshan"points in the foot tai-yang meridians has no effect on the gastric myoelectric activity and changes of the gastric myoelectric activity after EA at "the control points" of "sibai"points were similar to ones of EA at "sibai" points .The effect mentioned above was suppressed obviously follwing electrical lesion of NTS. The results showed that there was a relatively perticular relation between foot yang-ming meridiansand stomach, and NTS was an important primary nerve center in the medulla oblongata of the relationship between foot yang-ming meridians and stomach .2. The changes of the gastric myoelectric activity after EA at "sibai" points and "zusanli" points were similar to the results mentioned above , meanwhile the average optical density of SP immuno-reaction-positive fibers were obviously decreased after EA at "sibai"points and "zusanli" points applying immunohistochemistry technique, which suggested that SP was an important brain-gut peptide in the relationship between foot yang-ming meridians and stomach. .3. Effect of microinjection of SP antagonist [D-ArgLeu"]-Substance P into the NTS on the gastric myoelectric activity after EA at "sibai" points and "zusanli" points in rats : after microinjection of SP antagonist [D-Arg',Trp7'9,Leu"]-Substance P into the NTS, the excitative effect of EA at "sibai"points and "zusanli" points on the gastric myoelectric activity was enhanced in a certain extent, which suggested that SP had an inhibitory effect on the gastric electric activity in the NTS and inhibited the excitative effect of EA at "sibai"points and "zusanli "points on the gastric electric activity by SP receptor. Conclusion:The results mentioned above indicated that NTS was an importment primary nerve center in the medulla obongata and SP was an important brain-gut peptide of the relationship between foot yang-ming meridians and stomach..
