This paper emphasizes on the extraction of the ridge skeletion and ridge edge by the technique of digital image processing, which laid a good foundation for pattern recognition of palm print characteristics,especially the palm triradius pattern. With the development of medical research, it has been shown in a significant number of studies that among first-degree relatives of cancer patients, this illness is two or three times more frequent than that among the general population. So cancer is essentially a genetic disorder and may be inherited and/or acquired. Moreover the fingerprint and palm print are also congenital. If a chromosomal anomaly leads to a known genetic disease, tumor specially in our study, and is associated with a specific dermatoglyphic pattern, the obvious implication is that the chromosomal change occurred before the print was finalized--- regardless of when the disease appeared. A pattern of this type could be used to identify a segment of the population at high risk for disease far in advance of current techniques. With the development of science in the past few years, dermatology is studied more and deeplier. Not only are there different nations?reports about palm print and finger print, but the frequency of flexion creases is observed and studied as well. It makes dermatoglyphics into a new stage and accumulates a lot of materials for anthropology, genetics and eugenics. But a great deal of observations and studies were directed toward the flexion creases and fingerprint. These methods have their own disadvantages. More detailed medical information can be obtained by comparing the palm ridge parameters, such as their axial triradius, main line width, the number of ridges between area c and area d, the number of ridges between area a and area b of left hand and right hand. Considering this trend, combining digital image processing technology and disease dermatology analysis technique, we have studied ridge biology characteristics, which is bsaed on digital image processing. In accordance with related research, we assume that ridge抯 grayscale change is continuous. In light of this assumption and neighbour pixel grayscale change, a pixel can be further recognized as background or foreground. It can eliminate an unclear image抯 inconsistency close to the automatic threshold. According to the charactics of palm ridge image obtained from FPS-1 finger/palm pickup camera, this paper presents some developed and noval methords to preprosess the palm print image. The module of image analysis is divided into three parts, image reprocessing, extraction of ridge edge, extraction of ridge skeletion. I. Image preprocessing. Palm print image is a gray, which contains several kinds of noises. The aids of preprocessing is to remove the noises, reduce the compution, cut down storage location and extract ridge抯 characters correctly. Preprocessing is the first step to research ridges. Its result will refect analysising the ridres. Palm print images mainly consist of ridges, valleys and flexion creases. Grayscale values are evenly distributed on the palm print image. For images of this type, appropriate image processing algorithms should be based on template scanning, which are included: (I) use of histogram adjustment method to enhance contrast.
