Objective To investigate the serum leptin in normalpregnancies and patients with PIH and to study its clinical significance. Methods Radioiramunoassay was used to measure the levels of leptin and insulin in 28 healthy non-pregnant women, 90 normal pregnant women(24 in the first, 22 in the second, and 44 in the third trimaster ) and 46 patients with PIH(16 mild, 13 moderate and 17 severe).Nitrite reductase was used to measure the levels of nitric oxide. Serum leptin levels were correlated with insulin, NO and BP.Results 1 Serum levels of leptin in non-pregnancy, normal pregnant women and PIH were 19. 16?. 09, 25.25 + 7.65, 28.35 + 5.88 y g/1 respectively. (The levels of serum leptin in mild, moderate and severe PIH were 26.96 + 5.49; 29.14 + 4.89; 29. 38+ 6. 62 u g/1 respectively.)2 Serum levels of leptin in normal pregnant women were significantly higher than those innon-pregnant women, P<0. 01; leptin levels in PIH were higher than those in normal pregnant women, P<0. 01 and there was great difference between moderate, severe and mild PIH, P<0. 05 3 Serum levels of insulin in PIH group were higher than those in normal pregnancy. The serum levels of leptin positively correlated with the insulin levels. r=0. 891 P<0. 0010 4 The levels of serum NO in PIH group were lower than normal pregnant women. Serum leptin levels negatively correlated with NO concentrations , r=-0. 371 P<0. 050 5. The serum levels of leptin positively correlated with the levels of SBP , DBP and MAP r=0. 324, 0.403, 0.321 P<0.05 respectively. Conclutions The results suggests that the levels of leptin in serum increased in patients with PIH, which might play an important role in pathogenesis of PIH. Elevated serum leptin levels may be one of the monitor of PIH.
