Objective To investigate effects of antioxidant nutrients supplementation on an-tioxidative activity and lymphocyte DNA damage in young pepole. Methods 100 healthy undergraduates aged 18 years were randomized into the trial and control group with 50 in each one. In the trial group, a supplement tablet contained vitaminASOOOIU, (3-carotene 1. 5mg, vitaminE200mg, vitaminC800mg, seleniumiOO/ig were given to each subject every day; the control group took the same color and size placebo at the same time, the trial lasted 8 weeks. Diet intake was surveyed at the beginning of the trial and about 5 ml whole blood and 2 ml urine were collected twice before the trial and at the end of 8 week supplementation, levels of plasam antioxidant nutrients and SOD,GSH-Px,MDA were analyzed, DNA damage were analyzed by SCGE;O6 -Meg was analyzed by high performance capillary zone electrophoresis. Results There were deficiencies of vitamin A and selenium RNIs ( Recommended Nutrients Intakes) in the young people;after the experiment levels of vitaminA,E,C, (3-carotene, selenium were increased respectively 23. 87%, 12. 65%, 79. 92%, 17. 13% and 44.91% after the 8 week supplementation, which had significant difference compared with the control group; after the experiment MDA level were obviously reduced and GSH-Px was increased, but SOD activity was found to be decreasing after the supplementation, a significant difference of MDA level and GSH-Px activity occurred between the trial group and control group; before and after the experiment intrinsic DNA damage had no difference in the two groups, H2O2 induced DNA damage(10pimol/l, 50^tmol/l) in the trial group was reduced and had significant difference compared with the control group; in the trial group O6-methylguanine was reduced and had significant difference compared with the control group. Conclusion Proper supplementation of antioxidant nutrients could effectively enhance antioxidative activity and reduce DNA damage in young people.
