[Objective]1.To establish the induced acute maxillary sinusitis (AMS) of experimental rabbits and observe the histologic response of the mucociliary system of the sinus mucosa .2. To investigate the expression of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in rabbit sinus mucosa with AMS in different conditions. [Methods] 30 healthy Newsland white rabbits were devided into the normal, negative control and AMS group respectively. After establishing the induced maxillary sinusitis by inculation of the maxillary ostium and injection of 1.0ml Steeptococcus penumoniae (109 colony-foming unit) ,the investigation dates , 5 or 10 days from the establishment, were drawn up. Apply transmission electrical microscope to the analysis of ulstrastructure and AB-PAS hisochemistry to that of the sinus mucosa structure for inflammation cells, goblet cells and subepithelial glands. Localization of NOS in sinus mucosa of normal, negative control and AMS rabbits was examined by means of histochemical staining for NADPH diaphorase (NADPH-d).[Results] The sinus mucosa of nomal and negative control rabbits looked normal with very little secretion, having the much typical apperence of a pseudostraified columnar ciliated epithelium or basal layer and a fewinfiltrating leucocytes. There could be seen in the 5-day group of the rabbits the increased thickness of the whole mucosa layer, increased height of the cylindric cells, hyperplasia of basal cells, the loss of cilia to different degree, an increase in the number of goblet cells(contrast to the normal and negative group,?O.01) and subepithelial glands and a oblivious one of neurophilic granulocytes (contrast to the normal and negative group,P< 001), the severest of which infiltrate to the epithilium. The inflammation showed no significant degression on the tenth day except for occasionally found lymphocyte and plasmacytes ,but a greater number of goblet cells and subepithelial glands (contrast to the normal and 5-day group,P
