| This study was done to investigate the influence of chronic alcoholism on sex hormone levels in chronic alcoholics. Serum concentrations of Testosterone (T), Estradiol (E2), Lutenizing hormone (LH), Follicile-stimulating hormone (FSH), Prolaction (PRL) and Progsterone (P) were measured in 44 male chronic alcoholics without liver failure. The result measured in chronic alcoholics before and after receiving medical management were compared with those of receiving medical management group(n=20) and non-alcoholic healthy volunteers(n=29). LH, FSH, P, PRL levels in chronic alcoholics before receiving medical management were significantly increased, even after receiving 1-month medical management, FSH, LH levels still significantly higher than those of volunteers. T levels in chronic alcoholics before receiving medical treatment is higher than those receiving medical management and volunteers, but no statistically significant difference. E2 level have no significant difference between 3 groups. These data suggested that LH and FSH significantly increased,but there is no changes of sex hormone such as Testosterone and estrogen in chronic alcoholics without liver failure compared with volunteers. It is concluded that chronic alcoholisom have deterious effects on hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. |
