In the past twenty years, there has been an increased interest in calcium phosphate based ceramics and their roles in surgical and dental implants. Much attention has been paid to tricalcium phosphate because of its biocompatibility and long-term reliability. The implants can be totally resorbed by the body and transformed into natural bones. Investigators have been able to produce porous tricalcium phosphate ceramic. But the low strength of the ceramic limits its application. The preparation of β -TCP was improved with the adjustment of the constituents. A new bioceramic material with good biological and mechanical properties was made. The composition, micro-structure and properties of the β -TCP material were analyzed with TC-DSC, XRD, TEM, SEM, and so on. Their influences on the physical and biological properties were discussed. The solid-state reaction method was used to make tricalcium phosphate raw powder, with an average grain diameter of about 0.2um. A P2O5-CaO-Na2O-MgO-Al2O3 bioactive glass was chosen to add the fabrication of the porous ceramic which enhanced the β-TCP ceramic strength. The β -TCP porous bioceramic developed may have the advantage of accelerating the ingrowth of natural bone and the biodegration of β -TCP material itself.
