Purpose: to evaluate primarily the ability of urinary level of nuclear matrix protein 22(NMP22) as a tumor marker for the diagnosis of original and recurrent bladder cancer .Methods: urinary NMP22 values were determined for 28 patients with original bladder cancer, 10 with recurrent bladder cancer and 20 healthy volunteers by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA);10 of 28 patients with original bladder cancer were determined for urinary NMP22 value at 5-7 days postoperatively again. Results: the median NMP22 value of original bladder cancer was 27.1149U/ml and recurrent bladder cancer was 13.001U/ml significantly higher than healthy volunteer (1.6574)(p<0.001).the NMP22 value of patients with original bladder cancer were elevated with tumors pathologic grades increase; For 10 patients with original bladder cancer determined again postoperatively their median urinary NMP22 value decreased remarkably in comparison with preoperation. Conclusion: urinary NMP22 is a very specific, sensitive tumor marker for the diagnosis of bladder cancers and can indicate tumor's malignancy degree and prognosis.
