ObjectiveTo evaluate experimentally the effects of human umbilical vein implant in non -penetrating trabecular surgery (NPTS).MethodsThirty rabbits underwent bilateral non - penetrating trabecular surgery. An umbilical vein tube was sutured in the scleral bed in one eye , while the other eye served as the control. Intraocular pressure (IOP) , filtering bleb, intraocular reactions, histological exams and ultrasound biomicroscopy of the surgical area were performed postopera-tively.Results1)3 days after surgery, the bleb formation was similar in two groups. From the 1st to the 5th postoperative week, the number of existing functional bleb in the experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group(P <0.05) ,and there was no statistical difference between the two groups after 5 weeks postoperatively.2) Eyes in the experimental group showed longer postoperative IOP - reduction periods than those in the control group (8 weeks versus 3 weeks). From the 2nd to the 8th week after surgery ,the decreasing of intraocular pressure in the experimental group was significantly greater than that in the control group ( P < 0.05 ).3) Histological observation showed that in the control group fibro-blastic proliferation proceeded to completely fill the decompression space with fibrin clots and fibroblasts by postoperative week 2. In the experimental group , the decompression space was detectable and the implant can still be seen at the operative site up to week 28 postopera-tively.4) In the postoperative 4-28 weeks, the ultrasound biomicrosco-py showed that the implant was not degraded and the decompression space can still been seen.5) Mild hyphema occurred in two eyes and intraocular hypertension occurred in one eye postoperatively. No signs of significant inflammations were observed in the other individuals of the two groups during the 28 - week study , and no signs of foreign ?body reaction were detected in all the eys with umbilical vein implant.Conclusion1) The application of human umbilical vein( HUV) in non - penetrating trabecular surgery can prevent the adhesion of filtering channel and it' s well biocompatible with no toxity2) This study can provide experimental reference for the clinical use of HUV in non - penetrating trabecular surgery...
