Objective: To study the roles of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on the diagnosis and monitoring of ovarian malignant tumor. Methods: Twenty-five patients with malignant ovarian tumor and twenty-one patients with benign ovarian tumor were included as two study groups, while twenty healthy women were selected as a control group. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was utilized to measure the serum lever of VEGF. Result: Serum VEGF levels before operation in patients with ovarian malignant tumor (184.81 ±82.57pg/ml) were significantly higher than those with benign ones (50.05 ± 11.58pg/ml) and the healthy controls (37.35±13.50pg/ml), p<0.01, but there are no significant difference between benign and the healthy control group, p>0.05. In malignant group, serum VEGF levels in patients with advanced clinical stage ( stageIII&stagelV) were apparently higher than those in early stage ( stage I &stageII), p<0.01, but there are no significant difference in the levels of serum VEGF among epithelial ovarian carcinomas classified according to histopathologic type, histopathologic grade as well as age of patients, p>0.05. After operation, serum VEGF levels decreased significantly in malignant, p< 0.01, while in benign group , there was no significant difference in the levels of VEGF between before and after operation, p>0.05. On another hand, serum VEGF levels had a positive correlation with the serum CA 125 levels. The ROC curve showed serum VEGF levels had diagnostic value in malignant ovarian tumors, while the cut-off point is 80pg/ml, the sensitivity is 84%, the specificity is 81%. Conclusion: The results suggest that VEGF correlate closely with the carcinogenesis and progress of ovarian malignant tumor, serum VEGF levels with the characteristics of tumor markers shows a strong relationship with growths, metastases, outcomes of ovarian malignant tumor. So it can be one of the parameters of diagnosis and illness monitoring in ovarian malignant tumor.
