With the development of medical imaging system, all kinds of imaging devices produce multimodality medical image for medical diagnose, which can provide varieties of medical information such as anatomical & functional information or bone & parenchyma information. Each kind of medical image has its advantages as well as shortcomings. If the information from different resources is integrated by some way, so they can provide more detailed information for medical diagnosis and researching the function and structure of human being.Medical image fusion is a new technology, which integrates the medical image processing, radiology and medical image diagnoses. We can combine the multimodality medical image information efficiently; display the structures, functions and changes of the tissue clearly, and provide complementary information by using image fusion, which facilitates the diagnosis and makes function on modern medicine.This paper aims at pilot study on multimodality medical image fusion. As otherness of mechanism and parameters exists in different imaging, image registration is necessary before fusion. Image fusion is the appliance of information fusion to biomedical engineering. Firstly, the author introduced the technique of information fusion. Secondly, image registration was studied. The concept and signification of registration were explained, and common methods and models of registration were introduced. Process of image registration was designed. CT and MRI encephalic image of same patient were registered by the method of matching the pairs of internal character points. Three models (rigid transform, affine transform and projective transform) were applied, and assessment for the results of registration showed that target images can satisfy the request of registration. Thirdly, the author described the concept and signification and common methods of fusion. Then the registered image and base image were fused by an algorithm based on weighted pixel gray level. The result images showed that the elementary goal of fusion was realized. Finally, the author concluded the work and give out some suggestions for further research.
