Objective The study was to evaluate the efficacy of endo vascular irradiation using a simple system of 32P liquid-filled balloon catheter on the prevention of restenosis after interventional therapy .To investigate its possible mechanism..Methods The aorta of male Wistar rats were injured by balloon over-stretching and meanwhile the endovascular irradiation was carried out by a 32p liquid-filled balloon catheter. According the doses level all the wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups:OGy 20Gy 28Gy. 24 rats per group. At 1 day 3 days 7 days 14 days after the operation. The target vascular sections were excisted to be stained with HE, using computure analysis of photomicrograms to estimat the changes of vascular histomorphology. Intercellular adhesion molecule- 1 (ICAM-1) wasquantified to assess the expression by immunohistochemical techniques.Results the aortaes injured of three groups rats showed certain stenosis at the 7, 14 days follow up . Histopathologic analysis exhibited the decreased neointimal areas and larger luminal areas compared with the 0Gy both in 20Gy and 28Gy groups (P<0.01). and there was a significant difference between 20Gy and 28Gy (P<0.05). The percentage of ICAM-1 positive cells by staining both in20Gy and 28Gy groups has a significant decrease compared with the 0Gy groups. (P<0.05)Conclusion A significant effect of high-energy b-radiation to reduce neointima formation and increase lumen size was observed in 20Gy and 28Gy groups. Endovascular irradiation using Iquid-filled 32P balloon catheter systen could prevent restenosis , the mechaism may be due to decrease the expression of ICAM-1 . broke up the conduction of intercelluar signal and inhibit the proliferation of neointima.
