Objective To improve the diagnosis and treatment of renalangiomyolipoma. Methods 69 cases of renal angiomyolipoma during January 1994to December 2003 were reviewed. The pathology, manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of renal angiomyolipoma are discussed. Results Renal angiomyolipoma (RAML) is generally benigntumor without specific symptoms and signs. CT scanning and Ultrasonography are the most valuable diagnosis procedure. Ultrasonography is convenient screening method, while CT scanning is the most reliable diagnostic method. Frozen section is necessary for atypical cases during operation. Immunohistochemistry may improve accuracy. Although some cases of angiomyolipoma may require complete nephrectomy, most can be managed by conservative nephron sparing approaches. Minimal invasive surgery is an efficacious alternative surgicaltechnique for renal angiomyolipoma, as it provides less blood loss, less pain, faster recovery compared with open surgery. Conclusions Renal angiomyolipoma (RAML) is generally benign tumor. Medical imaging is the most valuable diagnosis procedure. Although some cases of angiomyolipoma may require complete nephrectomy, most can be managed by conservative nephron sparing approaches. Minimal invasive surgery is worth using.
