Objective: To offer some useful information in diagnosis acute renal failure(ARF) by studying the valure of the ultrasound integrated backscatter(IBS) in diagnosising ARF.Methods:40 kidneys of 20 normal rabbits(control group); 24 kidneys of 12 ARF rabbits(ARF group), made by injecting gentamicin (140mg/kg/day) for Tdays. After ultrasound examination, the rabbits of two group were given serum BUN and Cr tests from ear central artery and observed kidney pathological changes from renal samples. To analysis IBS among renal cortex and medulla and sinus of control group and ARF group respectively; To compare renal cortex and medulla and sinus IBS of ARF group with control group; To compare ARF group renal volume and cortex thickness and cortex echogenicity with control group; To analysis the correlation of renal volume and cortex thickness by statistic method. The statistic methods contained mean standard deviation, ANOVA, ttest , q test, rank test and analysis of linear correlation. Results: IBS wasthe significant difference among the renal cortex and medulla and sinus of control group and ARF group respectively(both P<0.001);Compared with control group, IBS and normalized IBS of the renal cortex and medulla in ARF group were increased significantly(all P<0.001),no significant change of IBS of the renal sinus in ARF group was found(P=0.751).Renal cortex thickness was correlated closely with renal volume, control group: r=0.709(P<0.001);ARF group:r=0.756(P<0.001).Compared with control group, renal volume and cortex thickness and cortex echogenicity in ARF group were increased significantly(all P<0.001). Conclusions: Renal cortex and medulla and sinus of normal kidney and ARF kidney can be described quantitatively by integrated backscatter. Integrated backscatter coefficients may reflect ARF renal parenchyma pathological changes.Renal cortex thickness is simple and easy measurement method which can reflect renal volume change.Integrated backscatter coefficients combined with renal cortex thickness may offer more useful information in diagnosis and differential diagnosis of ARF.
