OBJECTIVE:TO observe the changes of the levels of blood glucose and plasma insulin, histology of liver and kidney in streptozotocin induced diabetic mellitus rats before and after 5 weeks' treatment of Cordyceps sinensis(cs) at three different dosages.METHODS: The rats were randomly allocated into a normal control group (NC), a model control group (MC), and three Cordyceps sinesis group (CS). The NC and MC groups were given the ordinary feed. The three CS groups were given three special feeds including 5%, 10%, 20%Cordyceps sinesis. All rats were killed after 5 weeks. Blood and tissue specimens were collected. Blood glucose and plasma insulin levels were determined. The histology of liver and kidney were observed. RESULTS: Compared with MC group, the level of blood glucose in 10% CS and 20% CS group were markedly reduced. The levels of serum insulin were notably elevated in all CS group. Compared with MC group, the damages of liver and kidney in all CS group were mitigated.CONCLUSION: Cordyceps sinensis has marked hypoglycemic activity and notably protection for the liver and kidney of experimental diabetic rats. It can also increase the level of serum insulin.
