Recently, the relationship between cell apoptosis and tumor is a hot point of study in medical sciences.A lot of pieces of evidence showed that the biological features of tumor are closely related to the proliferation and ?apoptosis of tumor cells.Proteins encoded by Fas gene and Fas ligand(FasL)gene are important receptor and ligand, which mediate signal transduction of apoptosis. The incidence of pancreatic cancer(PC) are increasing in China.lt may contribute greatly to exploring the pathogenenesis of neoplasm by studying the expression of apoptosis related gene Fas and FasL in cancerous tissue. Objective: To study the expression and significance of proapoptosis gene Fas and FasL in pancreatic cancer. Methods .- Immouno histochemical technique was used to observe Fas and FasL expression in normal and cancerous tissues. DNA 3;-OH end labeling was used to detect apoptotic cells. Results: Fas and FasL immunoreactivity was detected in 30 cases from 40 pancreatic cancer and 1 cases from 10 normal pancreatic tissue. Expression of Fas and FasL in PC was higher than that in mormal pancreatic tissue (p < 0.01); apoptotic signal was present in approximately 10% of the tumor cells in only 3 of 40 cancer samples. Conclusion: Fas and FasL are expressed in most of the PC. Fas and FasL may be involved in the modulation of apoptosis in PC, but PC may have partly adapted the function of evasion Fas-mediated apoptosis.
