Objective To observe the effect of 17% EDTA and 2.5% NaOCl on the micro leakage of Class V cavity restored with Dyract and to evaluate the restoration for cervical wedge-shaped defects of teeth after 17% EDTA and 0.5% NaOCl cleaning the surface of teeth. Methods 100 premolars: without caries were choosed and class V cavities were prepared in the neck of the teeth. The teeth were divided into 4 groups, one was control group, the other groups were treated with 2.5% NaOCl, 17% EDTA and 17% EDTA+2.5%NaOCl+17%EDTA respectively. All of the teeth were filled with Dyract. Dying with 0.5% Basic Fuchsin, the teeth were cross-sectioned and the depth of the dying were observed, 155 cervical wedge-shaped defects of teeth with normal pulp from 15 patients were restored with Dyract. For each patient, teeth of one side were experimented group, the other side were the control group, and left or right side was alternatively changed randomly. For the experimental group, teeth surface were cleaned with 17% EDTA, 0.5% NaOCl before restoration with Dyract. For the control group, 75 teeth were not cleaned before restoration. The results of 18 months follow-up study with modified UPSHS evaluation criterion indicate that curative effects. Results There are significant differences between the control and the experimental groups (P<0.01), but no differences among the experimental groups (P>.05). SEM evaluation correlated positively with the microleakage observations. The difference of successful rate, retention and marginal integrity between the two groups was significant. Conclusions 17% EDTA and 2.5% NaOCl can reduce the micro-leakage of the Dyract. Curative effects, including retention and marginal integrity in the experimental group are much better than those in the control group.
