Objective : To investigate the prognostic factors of tonsillar cancer after treatment.Medhods : A total of 92 cases with primary tonsillary cancer from the Shanxi Cancer Hospital from Jan, 1980 to Dec,2001 were selected, All cases were confirmed pathologically and had detail clinical information. The clinical stages according to 1997 UICC TNM staging system were:stage I in 1,stage II in 10,stage III in 28,and stage IV in 53. The prognostic variables considered included age, sex, extension of primary site, metastasis of lymph node,TNM stage, therapeutic method, results of primary lesion after treatment, etc .The data set was established with Foxbase system. The survival rates were estimated by Kaplan-Meier Method. Logrank test and Cox regression model were used to study the significance of prognostic factors. Results: The overall 5-year survival rates and 10-years survival rates were 49.10% and 32.72%.The 5-year survival rates of I+II stage, III stage, IV stage were 100%,46.40%,40.40%,respetively.While the 10-year survival were 66.67%,25.78%, and 29.63% respetively. The Logrank test reveals that the metastasis of lymph node and TNM stage were statistical significant (P<0.05 = . Cox regression model show that TNM stage was the independent prognostic factor (P<0.05).Conclusions: The TNM stage is the prognostic factor of tonsillar cancer after treatment. The TNM staging system of UICC 1997 is feasible forHIestimating the situation of primary tonsillar cancer before treatment. To reduce the mortality of tonsillar cancer it is important that detecting the cancer as early as possible.
