Objective: To determine the value of serum Cystatin c as a sign of early organ damage in patients with essential hypertension. Methods:Forty-nine patients with essential hypertension were included in this study. The level of Cystatin c in serum, echocardiography (left ventricular mass index,E/A,E peak decreased time), twenty-four hours ambulatory blood pressure(twenty-four hours mean systolic blood pressure,twenty-four hours mean diastolic blood pressure, the day and night mean systolic blood pressure, the day and night diastolic blood pressure, declined rate of night blood pressure, blood pressure stress),the serum creatinine, twenty-four hours urine protein, α1 microglobulin and microalbumin were assessed. The correlations of Cystatin c and the rest index were analysed and stepwise multiple linear regression was carried out. Results:Positive correlation was observed between serum Cystatin c and serum creatinine, left ventricular mass index, α1 microglobulin, microalbumin, 24 hours mean systolic blood pressure ,the day mean systolic blood pressure, the night mean systolic blood pressure, blood pressure stress. Conclusion:Cystatin c may reflect early organ damage in patients with hypertension and is used clinically as detector index.
