Objectives This investigation was designed to study relationship between Serum pro-collagen Ⅰ(PC Ⅰ) , pro-collagen Ⅲ(PC Ⅲ) , tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1(TIMP-1)and target organs damage (TOD) in essential hypertension by measuring serum Concentration of PC Ⅰ , PC Ⅲ , TIMP-1 in normal subjects and patiens with essential hypertension. Methods We studied 106 never-treated patients with essential hypertension and 32 normal subjects. hypertensive patients were divided into two groups.one group was 60 patients with target organs damage and the other was 46 patiens without target organs damage (pure hypertensive patients). Then 60 patients with TOD were subdivide into subgroups: with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), cardiac angina, carotid artery wall thickening, renal damage, myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction. Serum levels of PC Ⅰand PC Ⅲ were measured as markers of collagen synthesis using radioimmunoassay, Serum levels of TIMP-1 was measured as a marker of inhibition of collagen degradation using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All subjects received a standard 12-lead ECG,echocardiogram , carotid ultrasonography, serum creatinine, urinary albumin and so on. All of hypertensive patients received a 24-hour blood pressure monitoring and cerebral CT. statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 10.0 for Windows. Results1 The serum level of PCⅠwas significantly elevated in the target organs damage cohort than pure hypertensive patients and normal subjects(all P<0.01). The serum level of PC Ⅰwas(95.74±18.95)μg/L in the target organs damage cohort, was(43.69±13.94)μg/L in the pure hypertensive patients, and was(45.34±14.31)μg/L in the normal subjects. 2 The serum level of PC Ⅲ was significantly elevated in the target organs damage cohort than pure hypertensive patients and normal subjects(all P<0.01). The serum level of PC Ⅲ was (200.83±27.48)μg/L in the target organs damage cohort, was (131.81±32.86)μg/L in the pure hypertensive patients, and was (91.47±22.97)μg/L in the normal subjects. The serum level of PC Ⅲ was significantly elevated in pure hypertensive patients than normal subjects(P<0.01).3 The serum level of TIMP-1 was significantly elevated in the target organs damage cohort than pure hypertensive patients and normal subjects(all P<0.01). The level of TIMP-1 was (758±60)ng/mL in the target organs damage cohort, was (548±44)ng/mL in the pure hypertensive patients, and was (405±47)ng/mL in the normal subjects. The level was significantly elevated in pure hypertensive patients than normal subjects(p<0.01).4 Comparison of Serum index in subgroups of TOD with pure hypertensive group and control group4.1 The serum level of PCⅠwas (105.51±17.73)μg/L in patients with LVH, (88.46±19.20)μg/L in patients with cardiac angina, (97.99±22.96)μg/L in patients with carotid artery wall thickening, (102.83±24.36)μg/L in patients with renal damage ,( 96.77±16.31)μg/L in patients with myocardial infarction , (69.17±12.06)μg/L in patients with cerebral infarction. The levels of PC Ⅰwere significantly elevated in these subgroups of patients with target organs damage than pure hypertensive patients and normal subjects(all P<0.01). 4.2 The serum level of PC Ⅲ was (206.46±27.85)μg/L in patients with LVH, (189.18±21.62)μg/L in patients with cardiac angina, (220.68±27.23)μg/L in patients with carotid artery wall thickening, (185.72±13.77)μg/L in patients with renal damage ,(213.13±26.35)μg/L in patients with myocardial infarction , (182.86±25.07)μg/L in patients with cerebral infarction. The levels were significantly elevated in these subgroups of patients with target organs damage than pure hypertensive patients and normal subjects(all P<0.01).4.3 The serum level of TIMP-1 was (785±35)ng/mL in patients with LVH, (705±30)ng/mL in patients with cardiac angina, (706±55)ng/mL in patients with carotid artery wall thickening, (691±47)ng/mL in patients with renal damage ,(816±85)ng/mL in patients with myocardial infarctio...
