Effect Of Hormone Replacement Therapy On Homocysteine In Postmenopausal Women.

Objective.- To observe the effects of estrogen replacement therapy(ERT) on fasting total plasma homocysteine levels and lipids metabolish in postmenopausal women.Methods.- 118 postmenopausal women were assigned to three groups. Group 1:38 subjects who took HRT for 1-2 years (2mg Nylestriolplus in a month, 8mg medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) daily for 10 days at intervals of 3 months). Group 11:40 subjects who took 2mg Nylestriol monthly for 3 months. Group 111:40 subjects who never took HRT. Measurement of fasting total plasma homocysteine and blood lipids was performed in every group and after 3 months in group II a ad III.Results: Homocysteine and apolipoprotein B, LDL concentrations were altered significantly after 3 months in group II [before ERT: HCY(16.17+6.63) n moL/L,after ERT: HCY(11.99 ?3.42) u moL/L, respectively(P<0.05); before ERT:apoB(0.92 ?0.31)g/L,after ERT:apo B(0.78 + 0.08)g/L, rcspcctively(P<0.01); before ERT: low density lipoprotein(LDL) (1.67 i 0.65)mmoI/L,aftcr ERT: LDL(2.35+0.87)mmol/L, respectively(P<0.05)]; Total cholinc(TC), triglyceride(TG), high density lipoprotein(HDL) and apoA-1 were not altered significantly. Compared with group , group III had statistically significant lower plasma homecysteine[(12.04?.99) u moL/L,(15.01 +6.11) moL/L, respectively (P<0.05)] and apo B(0.80 ?0.17)g/L,(0.09?0.18)g/L, respectively(P<0.01)J. Total choline(TC) -. triglyceride(TG) , low density lipoprotein(LDL) high density lipoprotcin(HDL) and apoA-1 were not altered significantly between group I and group III.Conclusions:IIRT/ERT have lower plasma homocysteine levels and apolipoprotein B levels in postmenopausal women.
