Part IThe effect of lower doses hormone replacement therapy on serum homocysteine in postmenopausal womenObjective: To observe the effect of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on fasting total homocysteine level in postmenopausal women. Methods: 62 postmenopausal women were recruited.30 women who have taken HRT for 2-6 years served as long -term treatment group(group I ),and another 32 women who never took HRT served as the controlled group of group I (group II ).Among group II ,22 women who took HRT for 6 months served as short-term treatment group(group III),and another 10 women served as the controlled group of group III (group IV) .Fasting total serum homocysteine was determined in group I and group II .Measurement of fasting total serum homocysteine was performed after 6 months in group III and group IV.Results: Compared with group II,women of group I had statistically lower serum homocysteine [(11.5 ?2.7) μ mol/L,( 10.1 ?.2) μ mol/L, respectivelyIV(P<0.05)]0 Fasting total serum homocysteine were not altered significantlyafter 6 months in group III and group IV [before (11.8 + 2.5)u mol/L,(10.6?.1) umol/L;after (11.0+ 2.7)u mol/L,(10.1+3.8) u mol/L, respectively(P>0.05)].Conclusion: Six months lower doses HRT has no effect on serumhomocysteine in postmenopausal women but the postmenopausal womenusing HRT for 2-6 years have lower serum homocysteine levels than thosewho received no HRT.
