Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the middle-long term outcomes of transactheter closure of atrial septal defect with Amplatzer occluder. Methods: Sixty nine patients with atrial septal defect were treated with Amplatzer occluder device through the percutaneous procedure from December 1999 to May 2003. They were assessed with echocardiography, twelve-lead electrocardiography and chest X-ray before and after transcatheter closure and during the middle-long term follow-up.The plasma concentrations of ANP were obtained from twenty five patients at before closure, and 72 hours, 3 months and 6 months after tanscatheter ASD closure. Fifteen healthy men were studied as control. Results: Amplatzer occluder were in good place, nicely and stably. There was no severe complication in the follow-up term. The left ventricular systolic function increased significantly in all patients. Electrocardiographic analysis showed that there were no atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter or ventricular arrhythmia. Seven RBBB disappeared in six months after operation and five RBBB lasted to now in twelve patients who suffered it before operation. Compared with control values, ANP concentration of the ASD decreased significantly after closure. There was not different from control values and the ASD patients'ANP concentrations at 3 months after the procedure. Conclusion: Transactheter closure of atrial septal defect with Amplatzer occluder can increase heart function. It can produce good clinical middle and long-term outcomes.
