Objective To study the management of giant cell tumor close to the knee of Campanacci StageII,III and pathologic gradingI, II.Methods Among the 65 cases of giant cell tumor that we were hospitalized between 1998 and 2001,45 cases managed with an intralesional procedure of the tumor (curettage, with adjunctive local insertion of methylmethacrylate) and 20 cases managed with artificial knee joint replacement after enbloc resection in similar site of tumor, radiographic stage, histological grade and follow-up duiation were chosen for a retrospective analysis. Results The rate of local recurrence ,complication rate and functional result between these two groups showed no statistical diffenrence. Conclusion Intralesional procedure of the tumor (curettage, with adjunctive local insertion of methylmethacrylate) and artificial knee joint replacement after enbloc resection are both effective methods in treating giant cell tumor of bone close to the knee. But the long-time function evaluation of artificial knee joint replacement after enbloc resection needs further follow-up.
