Purpose To study the clinical characters, pathological feature , and to survey the relations to the clinical stage, management, metastasis and recurrence of borderline ovarian tumor (BOT).Methods A retrospective survey was conducted in 37 patients with borderline ovarian tumor (BOT) or low malignant potential tumor of the ovary (LMP) diagnosed between January 1, 1994 and April 1, 2005. All of the patients were performed surgical managements, and there are 22 cases underwent chemotherapy after surgery. The 37 cases had a careful follow-up procedure. According the clinical data, the aim of the study is to analyze the relations to the clinical characters, pathological feature, managements and prognosis about BOT. Results Among 37 cases with BOT in this study, 20 patients had stage I , 3 stage II, 13 stage III, 1 stage IV. The mean age was 42.1 years. Histological type: mucinous (MBT), 23 cases; serous (SBT), 11 cases; mixed, 3 cases. Recurrences were observed in two of mucinous on stage III, with pseudomyxoma peritonea (PMP) after surgery, both of which remained histological borderline. The BOT patients were younger than the patients of the epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), and there were no much special clinical presentations before diagnosis. The clinical stage in different age segment has no significantly differentiation (P > 0.05). Most of the pathological type with BOT were : mucinous (MBT), 23 cases; serous (SBT), 11 cases; mixed, 3 cases, respectively. The M-BT was in the majority, the distribution of pathological type to different age segment has no significantly differentiation. Surgery is the main management for BOT. The elevation of the serum tumor maker levels as CA125, CA19-9 and CEA had relations to histological type. The surgery types were fertility-sparing surgery (i.e.
