[Background] The population aging has become a severe social problem. Atherosclerosis, as the principal cause of cardiovascular and cerebrolvascular disease, has threatened human health more and more and affected the safety and quality of life. It can lead to death or disability of patients. So it is paid close attention to find an easy-going method to check it early with good replication and no hurt. Color Doppler ultrasound has become primary method of finding atherosclerosis in clinic, it's economical, convenient, it causes no damnification, and it has good replication. In recent years, some researchers and specialists both in domestic and abroad have investigated the correlation of carotid artery and cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. While the correlation of artery of lower extremity and cardio- cerebrovascular diseases has rarely been researched. The lesion of artery of lower extremity and the diseases of cerebrovascular arteryboth have high incidence in our country. Atherosclerosis is one of the main causes of stroke and occlusion of artery of lower extremity. It has important clinical significance to evaluate the correlation of the occurrence and degree of atherosclerosis of cerebrovascular artery and that of artery of lower extremity. It is important to predict and evaluate the cerebral atherosclerosis through the condition of artery of lower extremity. The sclerosis of femoral artery, as a manifestition of arteriosclerosis of whole body, has similar physical and pathological principles with cerebral arteriosclerosis. Researchers abroad have found that the relationship of coronary heart disease and arteriosclerosis of lower extremity is closer than that of coronary heart disease and carotid arteriosclerosis. Domestic researchers have announced that there is correlation between carotid arteriosclerosis and cerebral infarction. While the relationship of arteriosclerosis of lower extremity and cerebral infarction has rarely been researched. This topic has two parts to research the artery of lower extremity with color Doppler ultrasound. In first part, we researched the patients with cerebral infarction of the changes of thickness of intima-media membrane and hemodynamics of femoral artery. In second part, we researched the changes of anatomical structure and function of femoral artery in normal persons of different ages, in order to reveal the relationship of arteriosclerosis of lower extremity and that of cerebral artery and to offer bases for clinical uses of new vascular ultrasound technique.Part IColor Doppler Ultrasonographic Assessment of Femoral Artery IMT, Function and Hemodynamicsin normal CasesABSTRACT Objective: To explore the the correlation of intima- media thickness (IMT), hemodynamics and elasticity of femoral artery(FA) in normal persons by high-frequency ultrasound, analyze the influence of age, blood pressure, heart rate and so on in order to define the normal value range and the influence agents. Methods: FA in sixty normal persons were examined by two-dimensional and color Doppler ultrasound. We observed the echo of the intima-media membrane and measured intima-media thickness(IMT), spectral and hemodynamic parameters including the systolic peak velocity, diastolic peak velocity, integrity of diastolic wave, resistive index and ratio of time from R peak of ECG to the start of systolic period to the time of one cardiac circle(TR-Vs /T). M-mode ultrasound was used to record the movement of anterior and posterior wall of common femoral artery between systolic and diastolic period, the diameters of systolic and diastolic period, and to calculate the cross-sectional area(IMSCA), stiffness indices, distensibility indices and compliance indices. Results: With the rise of age, normal persons have significantly thicker IMT (P<0.05), higher stiffness index, lower distensibility, compliance and TR-Vs/T in femoral artery (P<0.05), IMSCA, stiffness index, distensibility andcompliance were correlated to pulse pressure, not to systolic pressure ordiastolic pressure. Conclusion: High-frequency ultrasound is convenient, clear and economical intesting femoral atherosclerosis. IMT, Vmax, (TR-vs/T) can reflect thecharacteristics of femoral artery in normal cases and the functional changes withage. (Tr-vs/T) can be used as the routine clinical marker of degree of femoralaterosclerosis.
