AIM:To assess the effect of famotidine and cemitidine in common dose on human sphincter of Oddi(SO) motility with choledochoscope manometry. Method: A total of 20 patients having T tubes after cholecytectomy and choledochotomy were assessed by choledochoscope manometry. They were randomly into famotidine group and cimitidine group. Basal pressure of sphincter of Oddi (SOBP), contractive amplitude of sphincter of Oddi (SOCA), contractive frequency of sphincter of Oddi (SOF), contractive duration of sphincter of Oddi (SOCD) and the pressure of common bile duct (CBDP) were recorded respectively and analyzed. Results:Levels of SOBP and SOCA were decreased after iv administration of famotidine ,but the data had no statistical difference.Level of SOBP was decreased from 19.26±16.32mmHg to 9.93±8.87mmHg(10 min later) and 6.20 ± 6.33mmHg(20 min later) after iv administration of cemitidine(P<0.01).Level of SOCA was decreased from 106.55± 73.58mmHg to 79.24 ±59.93mmHg( 10 min later) and 52.09±37.11mmHg(20 min later) after iv administration of cemitidine(P<0.05).No apparent change of CBDP,SOF and SOD occurred after iv administration of both drugs. Conclusion.ALL these findings indicate that SO manometry via choledochofiberoscope is a practical and newway to study the dynamics of SO.The regular dose of famotidine had no effect on SO motility. While cemitidine shows decreasing levels of SOBP and SOCA and an inhibitory effect on the motility of SO.
