[Objective] To observe the effect of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) on the acute side reaction induced by radiotherapy (RT) in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma(NPC). [Methods] One hundred and twenty-six cases f NPC treated with radiotherapy for the first time were randomly allocated to two groups (therapeutic Group was 72, control group was 54). the categorical identifications typing in terms of the therapeutic group were deficiency of body fluids, accumulation of heat toxins, disharmony between spleen and stomach and deficiency of Yin of Qi and Yin. The therapeutic group were treated with radiotherapy alone as control group, and the therapeutic group with radiotherapy and Chinese herbal medicine. Chinese herbal medicine was medicated from the first day of radiotherapy to the 4th week after radiotherapy. The observed indexes were the therapeutic effect of two groups, comparison of radiological dose, total therapeutic effects of acute radical reactions, degree of acute radical reactions, the occurrence time of most serious situation and its lasting time. The flow velocity of static and dynamic saliva were also tested before radiotherapy and weekly. And the relation between the different stage of acute radical reactions and the syndrome types of NPC were observed. [Results] Before treatment, there was no significance between two groups. After treatment, the differences of short-term therapeutic effect of NPC and radiological dose for the original symptoms and local lymph nodes were insignificance between the two groups(P>0.05). The total scores of acute radical reactions in the therapeutic group were lower than those in the control group, the differences being so did those of acute side reaction on pharyngolary mucosa and salivary gland, also occurred in the cases at the terminal stage except the first week(P<0.01). The scores of skin between the two groups were significant on the fourth and the fifth week, and being...
