Objective: To study the changes and correlation of serum interlcukin-13, total IgE and peripheral blood eosinophil counts in asthmatic children. Methods 35 asthmatic children(the acute group and the remission group) and 20 healthy children(the control group)were selected. Double-antibody ELISA was used to detect the levels of serum IL-13 and T-IgE .PBEC measurement was performed in the meantime by the auto-blood analysor. Results: The results illustrate that the level of serum IL-13 during the children's attack period(43. 72 ± 6. 81) ng /L was significantly higher than that during the remission period[ (33.02 ± 4.39) ng/L] and in their normal period [ (17. 63 ± 2. 39) ng/L] , the difference had highly statistical significant (q=10. 67, 24. 53 , respectively, P<0. 01) ; The level of serum total IgE was [(689. 96 ± 43. 43) IU/mL] and PBEC counts were[ (114.95 ± 25.30) × 10~6/L] during the children's attack period. it was obviously higher in the acute group than that in the remission group[ (441. 41 ±89. 33) IU/mL], [ (100.28 ± 21.91) ×10~6/l] and in their control group[ (122.18 ± 31.27) IU/mL], [ (62.79 ± 14.54) ×10~6/L], the difference had highly statistical significant (q=20. 13,3.41, P<0.01 , <0.05; respectively, q=44. 12, 11.45, P<0.01).The levels of serum IL-13, total IgE and PBEC counts decreased markedly in the remission group, but were still higher than those in normal control group and the difference had highly statistical significant too (q=14. 47, 25. 14, 8.23, respectively, P<0. 01). The level of serum IL-13 (the attack group and remission group) correlated positively with serum T-IgE and PBEC counts (r=0.653, 0.324, respectively, P<0. 01) .Conclusion: The level of serum IL-13 is significantly higher in asthmatic children. There is a significandy positive correlation between serum IL-13 and serum T-IgE or PBEC counts. IL-13 has regulated and participated in IgE synthesis , it is a regulator in the pathogenesis of asthma and may play an important role in asthma pathogenesis.
