Objective: To investigate the association of matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) and its tissue inhibitor-1 (TIMP-1) to macroangiopathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: The serum MMP-9 and TIMP-1 were determined by ELASA in 40 healthy controls and 80 type 2 diabetes(including 40 type 2 diabetic macroangiopathy and 40 type 2 diabetes without complications). Meanwhile, triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol(LDL-C), high density lipoprtein-cholesterol (HDL-C), ApoA1, ApoB, lipoprotein(a)[Lp(a)], HbA1c, FBG, Bp(blood pressure), and FINS were measured and BMI,WHR, ISI index were calculated. Results: The serum MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in type 2 diabetic macroangiopathy was higher than that in type 2 diabetes without complications and healthy controls (P<0.001). Moreover, that in type 2 diabetes without complications was higher than that in healthy controls (P<0.001) . Serum MMP-9 was correlated positively with total cholesterol(TC), shrink blood pressure(SBP) and HbAlc (P<0.01 或P<0.05) ; TIMP-1 was correlated positively with total cholesterol(TC) and distole blood pressure(DBP) (P<0.01 或 P<0.05) .Conclusion: Serum MMP-9 , TIMP-1, total cholesterol(TC), blood pressure(BP) and HbAlc were the important risk factors of diabetic macroangiopathy. MMP-9 and TIMP-1 may play an impotant role in the development and progression of type 2 diabetic macroangiopathy.
