Objectives Based on the clinical competencies evaluation data of graduates from Huaxi School of Medicine, Sichuan University in 2003 ,explore score conversion methods, then on the basis of which to compare the graduates' clinical competencies of different kinds and different subjects, find out their weakness and provide the reference for improving the teaching quality. Exploring the appropriate statistical methods to synthesize each graduate's clinical competencies and provide the reference for assessing the data which is similar to OSCE. Analyzing the relation among all kinds of clinical competencies and providing the scientific bases for the OSCE design. Methods Hotelling T2 test and MANOVA were used to compare the graduates' clinical competencies of different kinds and different subjects. Appling the analytic hierarchy process to synthesize all kinds of clinical competencies of each graduate. The Fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method in which the combined weights were integrated was employed to evaluate the overall clinical competencies of both five- and seven-year-program students. The canonical correlation analysis was employed to analyze the relation of all kinds of clinical skills. Results There is a little difference of overall clinical competencies betweenfive- and seven-year-program graduates, and the history-taking, physical examination, the technique of history-taking and physical examination of seven-year-program students observed in Surgery , G ynecology , Paediatrics, Psychiatry are better than five-year-program students', but these competencies of five-year-program students observed in Medicine is better than seven-year-program students'. The five-year-program students is better than seven-year-program students in the scores of data collection skills (history-taking and physical examination skills), but the seven-year-program students are all better than five-year-program students in the overall scores of OSCE and the comprehensive final examination. There are some relation between history-taking and physical examination skills, data collection skills and technique skills of history-taking and physical examination, technique skills of history-taking and physical examination, data-driven reasoning and clinical decision-making skills of both five- and seven-year-program graduates. Conclusions The whole clinical competencies of five-year-program graduates need to be further improved, and five-year-program students' skills observed in Surgery SP-based stations, especially data collection skills need to be improved, so it's on the scheme to take advantage of standard patients to strengthen the students' clinical skills and focus on the training of t technique skills of history-taking and physical examination.
